Serve to Lead

During break, a learner races outside, football in hand, ready to join a game. Just before running off, they notice a peer still inside, head bent over a math problem that just doesn’t make sense. Without hesitation, he sets the football down and sits beside them. Together, they work through it step by step until the stuck learner finally looks up with a grin of relief. Only then does the first learner dash back outside, football once again in hand.

​This is what leadership looks like at Acton. Not the loud kind of leadership we often imagine, the boss giving orders or the manager in charge, but a quieter kind, rooted in service. In that small choice to pause and help, a learner showed what it means to put others first.

​That’s the heart of servant leadership: serving in ways that help others grow. Learners at Acton practice this daily, through intentionally etching habits they want to develop, choosing empathy, gratitude, and a growth mindset, while learning to let go of criticism, complaining, and gossip. Through squads and quests, they step into leadership roles, give and receive feedback, and hold each other accountable. The philosophy is simple; these clear decisions lead to the right habits and habits form character.

​Over time, these moments of service compound. A learner who once focused only on their own success becomes someone others can count on. Another who hesitated to speak up learns the joy of encouraging a teammate. Leadership becomes less about being first and more about helping others rise.

​That’s the kind of leadership worth practicing every day, the kind that starts with something as simple as setting down a football to help a friend.

Servir para Liderar

Durante el recreo, un alumno sale corriendo, balón de fútbol en mano, listo para unirse a un juego. Justo antes de salir, nota que un compañero sigue adentro, con la cabeza inclinada sobre un problema de matemáticas que simplemente no tiene sentido. Sin dudarlo, deja el balón y se sienta a su lado. Juntos lo trabajan paso a paso hasta que el alumno atascado finalmente levanta la mirada con una sonrisa de alivio. Solo entonces el primero sale corriendo otra vez, balón en mano.

Así es como se ve el liderazgo en Acton. No ese liderazgo ruidoso que solemos imaginar —el jefe dando órdenes o el gerente al mando— sino uno más silencioso, enraizado en el servicio. En esa pequeña decisión de pausar y ayudar, un alumno mostró lo que significa poner a los demás primero.

Ese es el corazón del liderazgo servicial: servir de maneras que ayudan a otros a crecer. Los alumnos en Acton practican esto todos los días, intencionalmente grabando los hábitos que desean desarrollar, eligiendo la empatía, la gratitud y una mentalidad de crecimiento, mientras aprenden a dejar atrás la crítica, las quejas y el chisme. A través de escuadrones y misiones, asumen roles de liderazgo, dan y reciben retroalimentación, y se mantienen mutuamente responsables. La filosofía es simple: estas decisiones claras llevan a los hábitos correctos, y los hábitos forman el carácter.

Con el tiempo, estos momentos de servicio se multiplican. Un alumno que antes se enfocaba solo en su propio éxito se convierte en alguien en quien los demás pueden confiar. Otro que dudaba en hablar descubre la alegría de animar a un compañero. El liderazgo deja de ser sobre quién va primero y se convierte en ayudar a otros a elevarse.

Ese es el tipo de liderazgo que vale la pena practicar cada día, el tipo que empieza con algo tan simple como dejar un balón para ayudar a un amigo.
